“To be a successful farmer one must first know the nature of the soil.” - Xenophon, Oeconomicus, 400 B.C.

My research focuses on soil health and sustainable agroecosystems using organic waste. I am working on scaling sustainable solutions for small-acreage farmers in low-fertility, low-input systems. My research aims to expand our understanding of the contributions of different field-level strategies for building soil carbon and increasing nutrient efficiency and crop yield. My research activities include on-station and farmer-managed trials to develop opportunities for scaling. Some of my ongoing research includes improving soil health using biochar and manure, climate-smart practices in the production of indigenous vegetables and fruits, and investigating interactions between biochar and black soldier fly compost for high-value turmeric production.
